You take one step through the front door Then you stop and breathe a sigh You drop your grocery bags on the hardwood floor Some days you’re just too tired to cry
You call up high school friends every now and then To relive your glory days But you haven’t been happy since you don’t know when So you try to cure that different ways
Life’s a smashup race for the cup You’ve been chasing the dream now it’s time to wake up Life’s a smashup race for the cup You’ve been chasing the dream now it’s time to wake up
You take a couple of pills for the headaches And you smoke to calm your mind You drink alcohol when your heart breaks But what you’re looking for you can’t find
So you stay out late at the end of the week In dirty bars at punk rock shows It’s getting rare that you and your family speak You’re keeping secrets everybody knows
Life’s a smashup race for the cup You’ve been chasing the dream now it’s time to wake up Life’s a smashup race for the cup You’ve been chasing the dream now it’s time to wake up
But they hope that soon you’ll see the mirror And work to salvage what remains Find some help to think a little clearer Find some way to deal with all your pains
Because you’re driving too fast down a dead end street And there are stones at the end of the pass You better slow down boy or you’re bound to meet With twisted metal and shattered glass
Life’s a smashup race for the cup You’ve been chasing the dream now it’s time to wake up Life’s a smashup race for the cup You’ve been chasing the dream now it’s time to wake up
Because it’s fourth and goal Yes it’s fourth and goal You know it’s fourth and goal Yeah it’s fourth and goal Because it’s fourth and goal Yes it’s fourth and goal You know it’s fourth and goal Yeah it’s fourth and goal Because it’s fourth and goal…
Driving home on roads slick with ice The weather’s cold, and I’m thinking of you We work to live, and we pay a big price, So we should feel proud of the things that we do
When winter smoke disappears in the air When the snow melts my love will be there When this body is dried up and gone The way I feel for you, my love, will live on
Under the branches of a sun-painted tree We take pictures and hear the birds up above Inside there’s bleak news running on the TV, But when I’m with you girl, I feel only love
When winter smoke disappears in the air When the snow melts my love will be there When this body is dried up and gone The way I feel for you, my love, will live on
Your pretty smile lights up this dim room And the smell of coffee casts a warmth on the place In the spring we’ll watch those barren limbs bloom You’ll lay in the grass and feel the sun on your face
When winter smoke disappears in the air When the snow melts my love will be there When this body is dried up and gone The way I feel for you, my love, will live on
When winter smoke disappears in the air When the snow melts my love will be there When this body is dried up and gone The way I feel for you, my love, will live on
It’s been snowing all day. I got off of work early because of the weather.
After playing in the snow with Sylvie and Jenny, I started working on writing lyrics for the first song of the new record. It’s going to be titled “Winter Smoke.” I’ll post a video of me playing the song when it’s finished.
This morning I was using Facebook, and I had an inclination to search for an old friend. Then, I remembered that my friend passed away many years ago. How strange a feeling that is – for one brief moment in my mind, my friend was alive, and now, he’s not.
And of course these thoughts reminded me of my own mortality and the mortality of everyone I love. What a weird feeling on which to start the day.

The couple birthed their first child this spring, so many of their present conversations detail how clearly superior their child is when compared to the offspring of other homo sapiens.
